Thankfully, rubies are one of the easier birthstones to care for. On the MOHS scale of hardness (the industry standard for measuring scratch resistance in gemstones), ruby ranks a 9 out of 10. That means these red beauties are naturally durable, hard, and strong. 

Cleaning them is straightforward. Warm water and a mild dish soap work well. Soak your rubies in a bowl of lukewarm water for about 5 to 10 minutes to loosen debris. Then gently brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a lint-free soft cloth.

Pro tip: Be sure to use the toothbrush to clean the underside and settings of your ruby jewelry. That’s where stubborn dirt often hides. You can wear ruby jewelry daily, but remember to store it separately from other pieces to avoid scratches.
