June babies are blessed with two, count em’, TWO birthstones to call their own! Only two months in the calendar year get this gift, so let’s introduce you to the stars of the show, pearl and alexandrite!
The classic pearl is a timeless symbol of luxury that needs little introduction. The mere mention invokes images of Hollywood glamour, the effortless elegance of high society that girls dream of their whole lives. As the pearl is the only gemstone made from a living organism, it possesses the ability to make you feel truly alive.
Created from the soft tissue of a mollusk, a shell-like invertebrate animal, the beautiful pearl is formed when a little teeny irritant such as a grain of sand gets into its shell. What a diva, right? Makes total sense. True pearls are organic, natural and GMO free, however synthetic versions are available and common.
Pearls are not just in necklaces, and they are not just for grandma. They can come in many different colors, not just the creamy white. They look beautiful in black, red, and even sterling silver. South sea pearl happens to be the favorite of Karen, the boss of our outfit!
And don’t forget about June’s other showstopper, the Alexandrite birthstone!
This color-shifting, extremely rare stone is as unique as it gets. It is famous for its ability to change color, as it’ll be green under daylight but red while under incandescent light. As the anniversary stone for a 55th wedding anniversary, this stunner is often referred to as being “emerald by day and ruby at night,” according to the American Gem Society.
One of the newer gemstones on the market, it was discovered in the emerald mines deep inside the Ural Mountains of Russia. It’s named after Russian Czar Alexander II, and the lore and legend are that alexandrite was discovered in 1834 on the day he came of age. We emailed Czar Alexander II for confirmation on this, but he has not replied yet as of press time.
Coming in at an 8.5 on the Mohs scale, this rare gem should still be handled with care but is good for daily wearing. We recommend both pearl and alexandrite in necklace form, and we have both ready for you today! Check out our picks of the finest ones available now in-store and online.
