As we move into the month of March, several things come to mind. First on everyone’s mind is Spring! With one of the mildest winters on record, hopefully we can all enjoy an early Spring. The other thing March if famous for is, of course, St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated to honor St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It commemorates his role in spreading Christianity throughout Ireland during the 5th century. While its origins are rooted in religious observance, it has become a cultural holiday celebrated by people of Irish descent and others around the world. In fact, many of us become “Irish-for-the-day” and don green in all kinds of fashions.

Jewelry is just one way to make a fashion statement for the festive day. Several green gemstones are associated with St. Patrick’s Day, reflecting the holiday’s theme of luck, prosperity, and the color green. Some popular ones include:

Emerald: Often considered the most famous green gemstone, emerald is associated with luxury, wealth, and beauty. It symbolizes rebirth and love and has long been prized for its rich green hue. Emeralds are the traditional birthstone for the month of May.

Jade: Jade comes in various shades of green and is highly valued in many cultures for its beauty and symbolism of purity, harmony, and prosperity. It is particularly significant in East Asian cultures. Jade is an alternative birthstone for the month of March.

Peridot: This olive-green gemstone is believed to possess magical powers and healing properties. It symbolizes strength and is associated with good fortune and happiness. The peridot is recognized as a traditional birthstone for August.

Green Tourmaline: Known for its varying shades of green, from pale to deep emerald, green tourmaline is believed to bring luck and success. It is also associated with creativity and self-confidence. Tourmaline is a newer October birthstone.

Chrysoprase: This apple-green variety of chalcedony is considered a stone of optimism, joy, and happiness. It is believed to promote love and truthfulness. Chrysoprase is an alternative to emerald as the birthstone for May.

Malachite: With its distinctive green banded patterns, malachite is associated with transformation and protection. It is believed to absorb negative energies and promote emotional balance. Malachite is on the list for the months of April and May as a birthstone option.

An interesting tidbit about the gemstones for March is neither of them are entirely green.

Aquamarine & Bloodstone: The aquamarine birthstone evokes the colors of the sea. From deep green/blue to light, slightly greenish blue hues, faceted aquamarines are often free from inclusions and as clear as water, symbolizing purity of spirit and soul.

The bloodstone birthstone is typically a dark-green cabochon that contains red spots of iron oxide, the “blood” that brings health and strength to the wearer.
